Where ever you are starting from, this intensive weekend will support you to move forward, gain confidence, learn new skills and develop as an artist.
You crave to get the results you see on youtube
Artists on YouTube make it look so easy, but it is hard to see the subtle differences on-line, even if the artist tries to explain. Seeing in person, feeling it, practicing techniques, getting personalised feedback and guidance will make a difference to your art.

if you don't succeed
practice makes... progress
I often hear 'I try it, but it does not work out the way I want'. Don't give up! Practice makes progress. The more you can understand and experience the paint interactions, the more you will be able to use this knowledge to manage what happens; to influence the outcome.

be one with nature
working in partnership with the paint
Fluid art is organic, it is nature at work – rather than thinking about the process as trying to control it, think about working in partnership with the paint and mediums. The magic happens in the interactions, you can create the shapes and feel of nature. Become a researcher in the fluid art lab and work in partnership with nature.

Dutch Pour / Hairdryer
Using the Hairdryer like an expert

A good fluid art painting using a hairdryer needs all the elements to come together - the right paint consistency, colours that work, the hairdryer creating pleasing shapes, flow and cells and on overall design that works. In this module we will explore all these and the endless varieties, providing lots of opportunity for practice.
What we will cover:
• Paint consistency
• Mastering the hairdryer for different effects
• Painting structure and design
• Colour theory
• Creating small cells - how to control, when you want them and when you dont
canvas provided:
• Practice canvases
• 2 x 16 x 20 inches
advanced dutch pour
Taking it up a notch with spinning and multi canvas paintings

Let's take the Dutch Pour to another level. We will use a spinner to enlarge a flower shape and learn to modify it for pleasing design. Create a design over 2 or 3 canvases for a diptych or triptych, considering how to make the canvas look like an integrated set.
What we will cover:
• Going bigger by using a spinner
• Constructing a painting over 2 or 3 canvas (Diptych / Triptych)
• Structure and Design 2
canvas provided:
• Practice canvases
• 16x16 inch AND 20x24 inch OR
2 x 12x24 inch OR 3 x 12x16 inch
integrating styles - swipe
Puddle pour or galaxy pour with swipes

Get into the flow with either a puddle pour and add swipes for effects OR a galaxy pour with swiped sections (planets) which are protected whilst the background is created with the hairdryer. These techniques will help with understanding movement and flow in paintings and how they integrate as a whole.
What we will cover:
• Swiping with various paint consistencies
• Tilting a larger canvas
• Integrating techniques
• Protecting sections of the painting whilst you add to it
canvas provided:
• Practice canvases
• 20x24 inch
Your art and craft workshops - Sun 6th December
Bloom - classic
Mesmerizing Blooms - on a spinner

We begin by practicing the more challenging Bloom technique on coasters. It is good to start with a smaller surface and work our way up. We use pigments as well as paint in our pouring medium, so the Bloom style is sparkling as well as mesmerizing. In addition to the classic Bloom, we will also explore modified Blooms.
What we will cover:
• Pouring mediums and recipes good for this technique
• Consistency and how to mix paints and pigments
• How to choose colours and layer paints on the canvas
• How to use a spinner to create centrifugal force for even blooms
• How to modify painting for extra effects
canvas provided:
• 2 ceramic coasters, AND 8x8 inch AND 12x12 inch (or similar)
Bloom - swipe
Save your breath and let the knife make the cells

We move on to using the swiping technique rather than blowing on the top layer to create the beautiful cells and lacing. We will look at a variety of tools, and explore the impact of different and multiple cell activators. Try your hand at the advanced 'spin swipe'.
What we will cover:
• How to swipe using a palette knife (of various styles and shapes) and how to use a loaded palette knife
• Spin Swipe
• Composition of painting
• Different colour cell activators and using multiple cell activators
• Tilting for effect and pattern
• Dragging paint out
canvas provided:
• Practice canvases
• 8x8 inch AND 16x20 inch
cells with silicone oil
Rings of colour

Creating cells with silicone oil is one the classic fluid art techniques. It is exciting to see the cells emerge, especially when they bring rings of colour.
Paint consistency and oil viscosity are key here and we will explore the difference these make.
What we will cover:
• Paint consistency and oil viscosity
• Flip Cup technique
• Tilting to keep cell shape and for design
• Swiping using paint with silicone oil
• Stretching a Swipe style
canvas provided:
• Practice canvases
• 2 x 12x16 inch AND 18x24 inch

what people are saying
“no experience needed”
"No experience needed and a space that enabled exploration and learning without any judgment whatsoever. I was really pleased with the outcome I had and the picture I get to keep will inspire me to try more myself. My questions were answered not only with clear responses but with shown examples where practical both in terms of the technique applied and a visual example too.
I do intend to go back for more classes as I enjoyed it so much."

“exploring your creativity”
"Julie is very good at explaining how it works and guiding me through the process. I enjoy learning about colours and the techniques. If you haven’t tried Dutch pouring, come have a go. It’s cool and you will have fun exploring different colour and textures as well as exploring your creativity!"

“we loved learning the different processes"
“My husband and I did the five week course together, and loved it so much that we came back for at least three other courses, to resin some of our favourite pieces and to make coasters for our whole family for Christmas! Turns out fluid art is quite addictive… We loved learning all the different processes, and seeing our understanding and control of the medium get better as the weeks progressed. By the time we came back for individual sessions we felt like experts! Plus it was always a lovely way to spend a night together relaxing and doing something creative. I’m sure we’ll be back again soon!”

“guidance that we need”
"Julie is a very helpful and caring teacher. She is very knowledgeable and gave us the guidance that we need in order to achieve the piece of art that we'd like to achieve ...
We came with the hope of our creations to be at the very least presentable (since we don't do art classes often), but ended up being very amazed and satisfied with what we created.
Definitely would recommend this class (and other classes here) to everyone with or without experience!"

Frequently Asked Questions
Whilst coming for the whole weekend will give you the best experience, we recognise that this might difficult due to time of finance constraints. You are welcome to attend just one day (limited tickets) - choose Saturday for thin paint styles Dutch Pour and Swipe or Sunday for thicker paint techniques of Bloom and Creating Cells with Silicone Oil.
The weekend is geared to meet you where ever you are at, and will be shaped around individual levels of experience. As a beginner, the weekend will set you soaring into a great understanding of fluid art. More experienced artists will be able to hone their techniques and explore their preferred styles.
Everything is provided - from paint, pouring medium and canvas, to gloves and aprons. We also provide morning and afternoon teas, drinks on Saturday night. We suggest you wear old clothes. To keep costs down we have left it to you to either bring your lunch, or buy it from many options in Bridge Rd.
Fluid art takes time to dry, how long depends on the paint thickness and size of canvas. It is possible that Saturday morning's art might be dry enough for you to take with you on Sunday. Art that is still wet can be picked up after a few days or can be posted to you. (Prices for this will be available on the weekend).
